About Us
The origins of the Society
The history of Crewe Philatelic Society started with a letter to the Crewe Chronicle newspaper by a Mr J.H. Ravenscroft and printed in the edition of November 28th 1936 and the society was founded in 1937. It was mentioned in the 1938 Philatelic Yearbook. The first President was a Mr J R Charlton
During the war the society was semi-dormant but meetings were held at his home but after 1945 it soon got going again at the old Christ Church hall which was just about where the Crewe Police Station is today. Gordon Wenham was the secretary for a few years.
In the late 40’s there was a Junior Stamp Club in Crewe being run by a newsagent in Mill street (who sold packets of stamps in his shop!) they held their meetings in the old Toc H building in Mill Street.
In 1954 there was an exhibition in the Corn Exchange Crewe entitled “You and your leisure” as a result the society recruited 4 new members which at the time meetings were held in the Welsh Chapel in Derrington Avenue the secretary being Mr Emrys Jones.
The society grew and eventually became a member of the North West Federation of Philatelic Societies, Along the way we changed the name of the society to “Crewe and District Philatelic Society” as we had quite a few members from out of Crewe Town
In the following years the Society prospered and membership peaked at 64, with average attendance at meetings being 32.
We supported an Exchange Book, received and provided speakers for the North West Philatelic Society Area and occasionally had national speakers.
In the 1997-2000 years Mike Griffiths produced a members news sheet entitled “The Crewe Philatelist”
1997 was our Diamond Jubilee celebrated with 2 events A Diamond Jubilee Celebration Buffet held at the Waverley Hotel Crewe organised by Mike Tuttle and an exhibition held in Christ Church Hall with 60 frames containing over 500 sheets of stamps and postal items.
Over the years, we have met at the Wistaston Memorial Hall, Crewe Public Library and more recently in St Peter’s Church Hall Crewe.
